The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), founded in 1997 as a joint initiative by the non-governmental organization Ceres and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), aims to improve the quality, rigor, and practicality of sustainability reporting, enhancing the comparability and credibility of sustainability reports globally, with the goal of achieving worldwide recognition and adoption. In 2002, the GRI Sustainability Reporting Guidelines (referred to as the "Guidelines") were revised from three perspectives: economic, environmental, and social performance. In October 2006, the third version of the Guidelines, reflecting the most widely recognized definitions of sustainable development, was released (referred to as "G3"). The performance indicators for GRI reporting include economic performance indicators, environmental performance indicators, and social performance indicators.
